Interesting that one can use the redundant pair to feed an extension but I guess that would require a junction box prior to the nte5?

Yes. This is frowned upon, but in practice appears to cause no problems.

Correct on the extension, suggests a junction box somewhere else on the property, and goodness knows what awaits us with that wiring.

In that case if one used an adsl faceplate filtered voice would be carried back along a 2 pair cable alongside an unfiltered incoming feed. Think I would be a little reluctant to do that...

A thought just occurred to me when replying to 4M2.

You remember you gave us this link to what your faceplate looks like?

Looking at the rear view of it - the one on the right - there is something in the centre, and on our left near the bottom is a plug sticking out with four metal strips on it.

Is that present, or has it broken off inside the backplate socket? (Or gone missing entirely of course).

Could well be since the phone works connected to the faceplate (?) - if an unfiltered faceplate with phone socket only and filter/splitter were tried broadband should be OK...just hope that in some way the OP is not attempting to get broadband from a filtered voice connection, although that seems very unlikely

More likely than my idea that the "plug" may have snapped off during the assault. If he's been using a filter into the test socket, it will only fit into the PSTN socket on the faceplate.

Probably best to just work from the test socket at the moment: if the entire nte5 is unsupported I can imagine the orange and white incoming pair getting snapped off if there's too much fiddling about (or another "assault" LOL! ) Once the nte5 is securely fixed back onto the wall with the green and black pair accessible then the issues with them, the adsl faceplate and the extension can be sorted...what do you reckon?
