Contention/Congestion or Problem?

Hey all,

Just a quick question. Just got home (5pm) and tried to download a couple of files. Download was at its max 40kbps.. Reset modem etc, and sync'd at 12mbps, still only able to download at 40kbps max.

Tried a number of different sites to see it it was just a particular server, but wherever i go its soooo slooooow!

Now, considering its 5pm and internet is probably getting hammered, should i see such a drop in speed from my normal 800-1.2Mbps download speeds, or could could there be something more to it?

If you're syncing at 12 Mbps you must be getting more than 1.2 Mbps download normally.

Or don't you know your bits from your Bytes?

I am having similar issues here too, synced @ 24mbps but very low throughput since about 4:30pm.

This all started yesterday.

Are you in Shropshire by any chance?

Possibly because Andy Murray is at Wimbledon this afternoon so people in offices are streaming it. That's rained off, but Centre Court has the roof on. Federer was also playing.

Olympics should be good .

What was the sync before the 12Mbps? If it was low, which ISP? Some have a delayed speed increase after a low one.

In which case almost certainly Entanet, who hold a copy of the IP Profile which is updated periodically from the BT one, not instantly. So it could be a lower IP Profile is being applied than expected, which is why we need to know the previous sync.

All back to normal now. I can understand a slight decrease in speed, but dropping to next to nothing got me kinda curious.

I guess it was down to traffic or demand or a glitch.

Sync speed is normally 11.5 to 12mbps. Very rarely goes below that.

Yes i do know my bits from bytes. As stated in my first post, i sync at 12mbps well 12171kbps to be exact, and download at about 1.2mb or 1278kbps to be exact. But it will fluctuate between 800k and 1.2mbps

You can sync at a very low speed if it is caused by thunder/lightning, and there's been a fair bit of that around. If the re-sync completes while there is another strike then the huge noise stops it being anywhere near as high as it should be.
