SKy Router failed, settings required fore replacement

HI All

Long shot, but if anyone can help it would be appreciated.

I�m trying to help my father in law, his Sky Router has failed (lights come on, router can turn on/off but were unable to connect to the router via wiresless or via ethernet)

I've looked on my list of wireless connections available and the Sky router isn�t listed there and all attempts to connect via ethernet have failed.

I have a spare belkin router but sky refused to provide the account username in order to use my other router (Instead they want £35 for a new router with settings pre-loaded. I've looked up this issue and there�s a way of obtaining the settings (if you can connect to the original sky modem) but no way of getting them without the modem working.

Can anyone assist or is the sky replacement router the only option?

You can buy a new one for less on eBay.

The answer may depend on which model router you have.
Have you tried the reset to factory settings button?

Yes ive tried factory reset. No joy. My concern if i get a new sky modem off ebay is i still wont know the sky username for the modem setting, unless sky use the same one for all routers

I believe the password/ username are unique / individual to each router/ connection.

I believe theusername is something like [email protected] so if you can determine the MAC address of the WAN port on the Sky router (it may be printed on a label fixed to the back), there is a website (which you can find via skyuser website) that will generate the password for that username. You should then be able to connect using your own router.

If he's still in contract, there is a warranty on the router.

If he's out of contract, threaten to leave and you'll get one free.

When calling its advisable to know a few details of the package your going to eg offers available so to the agent it looks more like you actually intend to go.

I'm sure you can go to talktalk and get cashback via somewhere like quidco or topcashback, get a free router and a few months free or 1/2 price. So a "free" router from sky isn't exactly a lot to ask for in exchange for continued custom.

if the initial agent won't offer you a free router, ask to talk to retentions.

What you need is the LAN MAC address and the default wireless password for the router, the later is normally supplied with the router when its sent to you, and the LAN MAC is often on a label under the router.

You may also find that if using PPPoA to try and connect with the other router, that you need to clone the MAC address of the old routers WAN port.
