Re: Exchange upgrade, do I have to do anything?

Just been chatting to the sub continent and it appears the exchange has been upgraded and is undergoing a stabilisation period!

So after this 10-15 days do I have to contact BT again.

Thats the old service still

G.992.1 Annex A will probably change to G.992.5 Annex A and the upstream speed will 900 Kbps

Your current 6.25 Meg connection is a bit slow based on your attenuation, a single restart and grabbing the statistics again shortly after will be useful.

If the line behaves after an upgrade to ADSL2+ you might actually manage the 11 Meg to 13Meg area

So the exchange hasn't actually been upgraded?

Or are they testing with the previous set up?

The exchange HAS, but BT Retail has to order an upgrade for you from BT Wholesale.

BT Retail tends to do this in bulk as its cheaper, so might be a few weeks before they do it. Sometimes requesting an upgrade early can get it done earlier, but they might tempt you into a new contract and offer new hardware at the same time.

So its a case of individual ordering is it?

Edit - A lot happened while I was concocting this stuff. Still go through it though smile [/edit]

Brilliant smile. That's exactly what we need. I'll explain the important ones. It does look like you could be getting more now, and with potential for getting almost double. Or at least a long way towards that.

First the modulation.

G.992.1 (= G.DMT) is ADSL, up to 8Mbps.
G.992.3 is ADSL2 which we recommend occasionally to people.
G.992.5 is ADSL2+ which is what you should be on. That's the "up to 20/24Mbps" one.

Second, the attenuation. That is basically determoined by your line length. If you look at the graph I linked to before, you'll see that on your attenuation we would expect an 8128kbps, (or sometimes 7616kbps), connection, not 6.25Mbps. Poor lines may be as low as 7Mbps, but yours indicates there will be one or more things you can do to get more than now.

If you were on ADSL2+ you could very possibly expect to get a connection of 12-13Mbps, double now, but whatever is holding you down now would have an even worse effect on that.

Third, the noise margin. That's a good indicator of issues. When you are first have broadband installed most ISPs set that to 6dB. Yours is 12dB and that extra 6dB is what is preventing you getting the 8Mbps. Some sort of instability has caused that.

If you want a bit of background reading, look at my Noise margin and BT DLM pages. You are on the "Old" DLM.

The most likely causes of your problem are the ring/bell wire in your master socket, and/or poor phone wiring, and/or plug-in extension cables. Is everything that connects to the phone line going through a filter, including Sky boxes?

For more on that sort of thing, and what you need to do, browse through my Unstable lines, Ring/Bell wire, High SNRM and Miscellaneous nasties pages in my Troubleshooting section.

If anything there needs a bit more explanation, just shout smile.

Note that best speeds are nearly always obtained by connecting in daylight hours.

Connection - Plusnet Extra Fibre (FTTC). Sync ~ 53.5/15.2Mbps @ 600m. - BQM

With some ISP's yes, and with others just wait and it will appear.

Usually with BT Retail is appears in time, but they are not the fastest at doing this sort of thing

Thats more like the sort of speed I would expect, so the estimate I gave for ADSL2+ earlier stands.

There may be some noise, have you got a master socket with a split faceplate? If so test at the test socket that is revealed by removing the two screws on the lower part, this disconnects your extensions in the property. If that reduces number of errors then see this guide on removing the ring wire http://www.thinkbroadband.com/faq/sections/radsl.htm...
