Broadband dropping out

Hi,

I have started monitoring my broadband connectivity using Ping graph and I see numerous drops in connectivity as well as ups and down in ping speed. The drops in connectivity typically last for almost exactly 6 minutes at a time (during the day these can be every 30 or 60mins but overnight they can be every 5 or 10mins), can any one suggest a possible cause? Does anyone know what electronic device or radio wave could do this?

We don't have a lot of electronic gizmos in the house - we are at the end of a very long rural telephone line (approx 2.1 miles from the green box which is FTTC upgraded).

The line is long, to the point where a few years ago you would not have been allowed to order ADSL. When ping graph has the gaps does the connection stop working and what does the router report, e.g. is it resyncing. Trying to figure out if the drop out is the ping graph tool (note user is not using the tbb BQM tool) may be down to a monitoring issue rather than a real drop out.

As this is talktalk offnet some of the issues may just be their offnet performance, rather than the ADSL itself. Hence the suggestion last time that you might want to consider swapping provider.

WHen Ping stats has gaps I loose internet connectivity, router stats shows OK until 5 and 1/2 mins and then it also shows loss in connectivity. Then it all starts working again.

Should I be using a different monitoring tool?

Can you copy paste a set of the router stats the next time it happens.

It is easy to miss the signs of errors if not used to interpreting the statistics.

The suggestion is that you are seeing 5 minutes of errors before the modem decides to resync, and from experience if you are using the TalkTalk supplied modems they can behave this way, and switching to different hardware might help improve things.

Most people on here use http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ping which gives graphs that we are more used to interpreting and can also compare to other talktalk users to see if its a unique issue to you, or a more common problem.

TT decided my router was faulty and have sent me a new one, its a DSL 3680 and it appears to have solved a lot of my problems with drops in connectivity - don't really understand the why or how of it?

In the router it was possible to activate the 'ping' function and I have run the BBQM for approx 24 hrs., results are in the following;

For all of these the router was plugged into the master socket.

I will keep the monitoring going just to make sure the connectivity doesn't change when the weather does.

I assume that this is as good as its going to get for me in rural Lincolnshire for the time being, unless I go for satellite or OnLincs delivers something?
