The PC is scanned daily. I've also run a full scan using Panda online. It's clean. If it were a virus/malware issue I would expect other website to be affected in the same way.
We drew attention to the possibility of that minor issue being the cause or a partial cause in our initial post but why would it only affect and XP system unless as Ian suggests the last MS patches for the OS are also involved?
Thanks. A and I plan to replace this system within the week. Access to Twitter using the XP system doesn't matter much. We have more recent systems and our tablets. But it is an additional warning that the OS is unfit for online use.

I'm using an XP machine posting this and FWIW can access Twitter via Chrome/FF/IE8 all ok.
OT: I'm just applying Windows Updates to a family laptop as I write this on Vista(I know!!!!!!) and that's not going well!!!
EDIT: Many restarts later Vista is behaving after looking very odd.
