Re: Bandwidth Problem now with Sky. But wasn't with 02 ???

[re: RobertoS] [link to this post]

Hi Guys, Big thanx for your help.

@ flippery. Yes, my neighbour on Virgin media, but I have no idea how to d/l a test file from this site. Dont know what is LLU? Am on Sky Unlimited.

@jamie543. The 6 cameras are Swann, each wired to the Swann DVR which is connected by Ethernet cable to BT Broadband Hub. I will drive over there tomorrow and use a speedchecker thingy to get the line stat and will post it here. (unless I can do it from here somehow)

@RobertoS. Hi again, The cctv end is BT Broadband 10GB/mth. The problem occurred after Sky had taken me from 02 (Feb) but whilst I still had the 02 Router. I wondered if that was the problem so asked them (many times) if I was supposed to have a Sky router. It fell on deaf ears until Customer Solutions Team got involved. Then I got one. Its been switched on constantly since 25th (so only 3 days) but nothing has changed and now CS Team say they can do nothing more. The line is fine, I can access the internet, so its not their problem.

FWIW my experience in life is that (any) things that stop working properly are usually because somebody has recently changed something. (aka The Simpler Solution is usually the more Correct). Only thing I know that changed, is my provider.

Really appreciate your help Guys. Thank you very much.
If PMing me would be easier than posting and waiting . . please do it. Thanx again

http://www.thinkbroadband.com/download.html

Just click the 50MB or 100MB file and time how it takes to arrive. Though usually the speed test at

http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest.html
or
http://labs.thinkbroadband.com/ispa

Will test things just as well.

NOTE: If its just a 10GB allowance you need to check that BT are not counting the upload too, if memory is working they do and it may you have exceeded this and they have slowed things down a lot.

Testing the Sky connection to show its running at the speeds indicated by the modem stats is the first step.

Further info:
I went next door with an IPad and connected wirelessly, he's on same Sky BB package as me via BT phone line. Result was same as me, only 1 of the 6 cctv cams displayed.
I then went other side next door neighbour with the IPad, he's on Virgin Media (cable?). There we had 2 cctv cams displayed.
Is it beginning to look like the prob is at the cctv end . . ? maybe as you suggest, BT possibly restricting the upload?
Regards Carl

Further further info
When missus takes same IPad to her Mums, where the 6 cctv cams, the DVR and the BT BB Hub are . . . . she can, wirelessly see all 6 cctv cams on the IPad.
Does that explain anything ? ?

I prefer to save and view test file from Internet Explorer. I can see the speed variation continuously and note any change in speed / stuttering during download.

If OP is on Unlimited then rules out unreliable Connect, I believe.

This would not be using the internet surely only Local Network.

You can check usage by logging into BT Account.

Only way is to test at site using Ipad . There may be a problem with BT line that has caused change or, BT Modem.

This morning we checked out Ma-in-laws BT BB account on internet and it shows in the last month, uploads and downloads equal at 2.82 GB of a 10 GB account and a monthly average of 2.01GB. (she d/ls nothing. The BB is purely for us to access the cctv from a distance)
So just now we called BT Broadband to ask if they'd changed any settings on Ma-in-laws service. . . . . . And spoke to Shiva in India. . . . . . . . . . . .
Anyway, he said they hadnt changed anything, then asked for my Sky d/l speed which I told him was 5994 kbps. Being the cynical old [censored] that I am, (Lifes experiences have made me this way) he responded as I expected he (BT BB) would. The problem he says is MY d/l speed.
So, Guys . . are they right? In meantime wife has gone over to her Mums to get the Router Statistics. Will post them tonight.

To get the CCTV from your mother in laws it will utilise the upload of that service.

have you confirmed what that upload speed is? If its an ADSL2+ service then THAT is the bottle neck plain and simple.

You would expect video from a webcam to operate usually in the 300 to 500 Kbps region, but varies based on what you have configured in each webcam.

Hi MrSaffron
Wife just rang me with figures from BT Hub but couldn't find figures for Noise Attenuation on it.
Downstream 3.865 Mbps
Upstream 812.8 Kbps

Haven't configured the webcams, they were just installed straight out the box and work fine.
Sorry, they're cctv not webcams
