Re: Can fibre negatively impact ADSL?

I know, I alluded to that. I also used the term "full fat" as shorthand for using the full ANFP power mask allowed in exchanges. That story refers to one which uses a compromised ADSL power mask using only those frequencies which have been so attenuated (at the cabinet) that they are of little use from the exchange. What that means is the most useful frequencies for long reach are out of bounds. By serving all ADSL lines from the cabinet only it would give much significantly greater range and speed.

My ADSL2+ nightmare since the arrival of fibre works has been well documented here. What was a 15mbps line rock solid down to 1db snr, is now exactly half that with a 12db snr. All I am told is get fibre if I want to improve the line as there is so much noise on my line now. Have read of plenty more such cases.

My ADSL2+ speeds (20 Meg Fast Path @ 3dB NM) have never dropped an iota since FTTC came to my urban area and I'm sure that most of my neighbours have FTTC.

Our close is fed by overhead cables to a pole in the middle of it. But then it goes underground and would then be bundled together. Does that make any diff?

In reply to a post by brandscill:
Fibre has recently come to my area but I'm not close enough to he cabinet to benefit. I have started to notice though that since its been available my connection has begun to deteriorate somewhat. More drop outs, slower speed and higher ping.

Could this be coincidence or related? I'm still on your standard ADSL Max

Yes it can have a negative effect on ADSL connections. I'd imagine the biggest problem would be crosstalk as all lines are in close proximity in the cabinet and ducts.

The other often overlooked effect that FTTC can have on ADSL (Indirectly) is that engineers have to mess around re-patching cables in the old cabinet for every new customer (Connecting them to the new cables going into the new cabinet).
Many cables are very old and sometimes even the slightest touch can alter the connection parameters for any DSL connection if the cable is poor/brittle.

So yes it can have a negative impact on ADSL both directly and indirectly.

No, I'm not close enough from the cabinet for fibre. It was activated in January.

Thanks

I wish I could move to ADSL2 but it's only ADSL or fibre, the latter of which I cannot get
