Retention spiel could have been stopped by Ofcom in the same way as it has been for GPL.

Hard to enforce though. One way would be to force every ISP to offer a MAC generator within the control panel so that contact with customer services could be avoided, but that was never going to happen.

Having to contact the ISP and hear their bottom lip quiver was always a downside of the MAC system for me.
