Thank you to everyone for all of the replies and I have now made the decision to abort signing up with SSE. Some of the stories I have read, about delays lasting several weeks mainly, have made me feel very uneasy to say the least. I can handle waiting a couple of weeks, or a bit longer, but any more than that would make things every awkward for me.

I think that I am going to sign up with Plusnet instead and will very likely subscribe to their ADSL 'Up to 17Mb' service. So, if anyone can recommend a good quality modem/router, without wi-fi built in, then I would be very grateful. There would never be more than 5 computers connected to it, just in case anyone needs to know that. I know some people have said that wi-fi can be switched off etc., but I would still rather purchase one without wi-fi built in. Price isn't really a factor, unless it turns out that some of these things cost a lot more than I thought they did. :-0 Much appreciated.

They would need a switch as well, or homeplugs, as it only has two ethernet ports.

Useful that the Draytek has six Ethernet ports.

Gig switches are cheap enough these days

I have just got set up with SSE broadband and must say it wasn't my best choice, poor customer service who don't know much about broadband talk, do i blame the agents. No. I blame the company but yes your right to stay away from them.

You can use your own router if you do choose to sign up with them, i did get my broadband on the promise date, i'd say 2-3 weeks in total (New Line Install) and you are able to switch wifi off if you please.

Now i'm in an 18 months contract :/ Lucky me

Yes, it turns out some of these things do cost a lot more than I thought they did. Still, just about affordable and for being what I want it to be I suppose I can justify paying that much. I think I will take the plunge on this make and model then. I saw that the Huawei is supplied by BT, so it probably has a secret wi-fi hotspot you can never turn off, encased in concrete, installed inside. :-0 No, being serious, I have always tried to avoid using connectors and adapters etc. whenever possible. Thank you for the recommendations.

P.S. On second thoughts, probably not too far off the mark in relation to BT actually...

Touch wood, you will be ok now it is all up and running.

The Billion 7800 ADSL2+ router is available without wireless. But, not sure why anyone would buy it as it isn't much cheaper than others of their routers that have wireless (and in the 8800 range also have VDSL2).

If the OP doesn't want wireless they can always disable the WiFi.
