Sounds like rain getting in a connection somewhere. I had that problem a while back and it was a cracked box cover letting rain in. Wait till it's raining to call the phone company. When they send an engineer out mention that it happens after rain and they will check for it.
Well the cracking could be down to a loose connection outside some place, probably the box on our phone pole (has a few times fallen off the pole), the screeching could also be a mixture of a loose connection along with the rain getting in.

What I will do is wait until it rains again like you said and also the line is bad, I will wait a little while and reboot our HH4 so that it syncs up at the connect speed and then phone BT on my mobile so that they can do some tests on the line, that way they will hear all the noise along with the HH4 syncing back up.

Nope due to its not the phone, I can unplug the phone from the line and power and then call the landline (no phone connected) and we loose the broadband, so that's taking the phone out of the equation, but I did think that at one point.

Testing with a second phone is good if for no other reason than being able to say you tried that if they try to charge you for the engineer visit.
