Been around for a few years ... the trick is to get someone who actually knows about it!

Ah, ok.

I wasn't aware that they had started supplying ADSL Speeds over Fibre for the areas far from the cabinet to get the full fibre service.

That's good to know.

Paul

It still uses the same VDSL technology however due to line length the achievable speed is lower. Much like, those on ADSL2+ close to the exchange can get 20meg+ whereas those further away can maybe only get 2meg.

It's to do with the term "superfast" which when FTTC was originally released, Openreach said anything about 15meg was superfast and if your line couldn't achieve that then BT weren't able to sell you "superfast Infinity" so they created the "faster broadband" product. It's been around since day 1 of FTTC, it's not something new. Just not that many people know about it as it's not really advertised for some reason.
Oh I am aware how it works, I just wasn't aware that they had started using it because I haven't seen anywhere using it until possibly now.

Not sure what you think has changed.

Selling a non-Infinity product for sub 15 Mbps speeds is PURELY a BT Retail decision and nothing to do with other providers and something they have been doing for year.

And the price BT charge their customers is lower than Infinity - and if you then get better than 15Mbps, I believe the price may not be increased.

Thanks for all the information guys, I have got more in the last 24 hours from you than months of trawling the web and calling service providers. I will get some of those metrix when I am back at home.

The smaller ISPs such as Aquiss, uno and vivaciti also used to sell it as low as 5Mbps, perhaps even 2Mbps, from day 1. Of course, they tend not to do unlimited allowances, but worth an ask as to what they can offer.
