For my hands, I wore a pair of lady's cotton, thin dress-gloves, with a pair of cyclist's mitts on top. The mitts had only the first joint of each finger present, leaving the rest of each finger exposed and flexible within the aforesaid gloves.
Better prepared than frozen.

The RAF Greatcoats of the period were also very protective and warm, particularly if no bedding was available.
Fasten up the coat fully, without putting it on.
Enter from the bottom, passing your legs into each sleeve respectively, thus also keeping the feet warm.
