Just read on another forum that new starts are given a 1 year probation to then have it extended to 2 after 12 months without warning. So if and when we get an offer keep a copy guys as we may need it!

Quote

When I accepted my offer I was sent a digital contact, which was vague at best and asked to tick a box as acceptance. It stated that my probationary period was one year. I thought this was excessive as have never come across a probationary period so long before but accepted nevertheless.

After completion of training I am then told by manager that the probationary period is in fact 2 years. Having also spoke to other engineers who have been on a few years they also tell me the same thing. When their first year is up they receive an email explaining that their probationary period has been extended with no reason. Having just started and no particular reason for an extension how can Openreach get away with stating 1 year when its 2 regardless of performance??

I wouldn't worry too much about that.

I can't remember the exact regs but I will look for it later.

In short under EU law, which for now applies, a contract is deemed permanent after 6 months I think providing you work full time for that period. It may be 12 month. I will find the exact law later on.

I'm in work at the moment but if you google Labour Law probationary period contracts it should give you the law on it.

Like I said I'm pretty confident it's 6 months.

I work for the Police and we have 2 year probationary period but we are not employees. Servants to the Crown so the regs don't apply to us.
