Re: Gmail in Outlook client app

[re: mikejp] [link to this post]

I have no problem accessing my Gmail webmail but I've dismally failed to activate my Gmail account in Outlook. I've double checked the settings against what Gmail provides but at test stage it just stalls - sits there testing with no outcome! I have wondered whether to let it run and see if there's any resolution. I've also allowed access to Gmail.
That popup does seem to appear less frequently - maybe it will eventually give up!

"I've also allowed access to Gmail." Which OS is this on and is it IMAP or POP?

In reply to a post by MrSaffron:
Are you implying that using any of those services will see malware installed onto your computer?

Analysis of data in the cloud for advertising type purposes is very different to the problems of malware

Yes.
Wikipedia definition of malware:-
"Malware, short for malicious software, is any software used to disrupt computer or mobile operations, gather sensitive information, gain access to private computer systems, or display unwanted advertising"
I'd say that describes Alphabet / Google to a tee.
Remember, if you get something for free, that makes you the product.
Alphabet / Google don't just sell your data to advertisers, they harvest your information to create datasets and in the case of email, they harvest your contacts, scrape your incoming emails for data on the sender, creating datasets on people and entities that have not explicitly consented to Alphabet / Google's terms of service. All in all, 'malware' seems to fit their business model pretty well.

Windows 10. Gmail is IMAP. I was told on this forum that Google doesn't trust MS and regards it as a less secure app. Hence the need to open access.

As mentioned before, if you enable two factor authentication in Google/Gmail you can generate an app specific password and keep "enable less secure apps" disabled.

Windows10, Outlook10, GMail on POP, 'insecure' turned on and all works fine.

Looks like you fit this suit and you say this does not fix it?

Thank you, and have that password but, to be honest, until I can get Gmail downloading into Outlook, I'm keeping it simple. If I can't get access with my regular password I don't feel comfortable about using an alternative - yet!

My setting are as you describe but my log in username for Gmail is my whole email address Another forum user has pointed out that out. I will try it, though.
