Do you have an over agressive malware protection or firewall blocking ports 993 and 587?

I have no idea. I do have Premium Malwarebytes.

Try disabling it briefly and try again to connect to gmail.
Don't forget to re-enable it when you're done.

That will at least tell you whether Malwarebytes is causing the problem.

Just tried adding my gmail account to Outlook and had it up and running in about 30 seconds.

I'm using a Mac and Office365, but literally all I had to do was use the Wizard, select other email account and then provide my full email address (including the @gmail.com bit) and password and Outlook did the rest.

I really think your problems are to do with your own computer setup rather than a fundamental issue with Outlook talking to gmail.

I've given this some thought and a) changing my 'username' got a negative result - but a result for all that.
b) Malwarebytes always pops up an alert when blocking something. You can't miss it.
I've got a friend who uses both and works in the field helping me out later this week, but thank you for your input.

You've forgotten More Settings / Outgoing Server: Requires Authentication Using same settings as Incoming. It's not defaulted.

If Outlook doesn't offer TLS you can use instead Outgoing on port 465 and SSL.

It's all in :

You may find it better not to let Outlook test your settings but just put them in manually and test them yourself by sending yourself an email.
