21CN WBC

[link to this post]

Apologies for bringing up this one again...but our broadband is still in the 20th century (fixed 0.5mb, exchange activate)

How can I discover if/when our exchange will be upgraded to 21CN?
Are BT going to upgrade all old exchanges?
Our exchange is STRATHCONON / NSSCN

Not having a 'plan for a plan' for anything remotely superfast broadband, we dream of anything above 5mb from a BT line

I've contacted BT wholesale but unlikely to get a response since I'm not an ISP!

Any help gratefully received

An exchange with about 55 connections ... and with you getting just 0.5 Mbps you must be a significant distance from the exchange too. Do you know where your closest cabinet is? And the actual distance to the exchange?

Have you thought about asking Virgin when they might cable your area too? Just tell them you grow plenty of cherries!

Distance from the exchange is irrelevant as this type of exchange has a fixed 0.5 mb connection

http://www.sirgeorgeyoung.org.uk/pages/bt-exchangeac...

We're about 2km from the exchange and about 12 miles from any significant population

You've probably seen that there is no alternative supplier so cherries (or raspberries!) will not be much help enticing any unsuspecting ISP!

I'm just curious regarding the aim to move all exchanges to 21CN by end 2018 includes this set of anomalies in Scotland?

Interesting ... Strathconon is, according to SamKnows, enabled for ADSLMax. https://availability.samknows.com/broadband/exchange...

If that is correct then at 2km you should have significantly higher that the 0.5 Mbps you are currently getting.

The comment on Virgin and Cherries was slightly tongue-in-cheek. They are renowned for "cherry picking" where they will install!

and we're more famous for raspberries in this part of the world smile

the link to the George Younger website explained why we'll never go above 0.5mb.
It was ok at the time as it gave us 'broadband' but then created instant legacy as we could never get a speed increase...which is why any intention to move to 21CN could make a difference

In the link it says:
BT has today announced plans to investigate a new ADSL Exchange proposition. The new proposition will enable Service Providers and sponsoring organisations to connect end users in blocks of 30 to any exchange that does not yet have broadband deployed, thereby generating revenue from areas of pent-up demand.

However, your exchange does have ADSLMax deployed according to SamKnows which is at odds with the link.

SamKnows is quite often incorrect.....Sam DOESN'T Know....do not rely on that website to be >80% correct /up to date.

Exchange activate is limited to 0.5 Mbps only a handful of Scottish exchanges good job my small exchnage was not exchange activate.

Our systems suggest IPStream Max but I know its wrong, and was hoping that WBC roll-outs would mean I don't have to code yet another addition to the ever growing set of rules.

Checking BT Wholesale its showing as nothing at all in line with what I recall from when Exchange Activate was in more places. There are also a few exchanges with not even Exchange Activate which I do have in our system.

If you haven't already, get in touch with your local BDUK authority (Highlands & Islands Enterprise) they may give you a better idea what (if anything) is planned for your exchange area wrt FTTC/P.

apologies for slow response...but slow internet on fixed 0.5mb etc etc

I have been in contact with CBS and now HIE for the last couple of years but that's not been a useful route - lots of talking and very little mobilisation.
All they've ever been able to say is 'You are not on the white post code list' but never 'we can tell you when we should have a plan for a plan for any form of superfast bband solution'

Our approach is fourfold

1 - try to mobilise a local initiative via Cromarty Firth Wireless if we can get funding for a backbone upgrade for a friendly farmer who has a mast on his land. Possible wireless solution by end 2018 - but I'm worried momentum will slow due to the R100 initiative impacting any initiative seeking non-government funding (i.e. windmill farm funding)

2 - wait for the Scottish government's R100 initiative to bear fruit. Concern on this option that it wont decide anything until early 2019 and then we'll be at the back of a long queue due to low population so may get something by early 2021

3 - hope that Openreach upgrade the exchange to CN21 to give us something better than fixed 0.5mb

4 - continue paying £70 pm for high-latency, low usage cap

its not for the lack of trying to seek alternatives...
