Speedtest.net now offers single thread speedtests

[link to this post]

Just noticed there is now an option for a 'single connection' speedtest on speedtest.net, though default is still multi-connection. Up until now TBB was the only well known speedtest site offering single thread tests and for some - incl my ISP FluidOne and Virgin Media - TBB single thread results were/are a bit weird. However I'm happy to report single thread tests on speedtest.net pretty much match their multi-thread speedtests for my line. I suspect Virgin Media users will experience the same smile

Yeah I was going to post this yesterday, here are my results compared to the TBB Results:

[Ookla Single Download Result]
https://www.speedtest.net/result/7899470691

[Ookla Multi Download Result]
https://www.speedtest.net/result/7899474063

[TBB IPv4 Result]
https://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/15454348346...

[TBB IPv6 Result]
https://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/15454349465...

What I did with the Ookla Speed Tests, was to pick a London Server (BT screwed up with allocating my connection with an IP which is Geolocated IP up north 250miles away, yeah I could just keep resetting my connection until I get a good IP, but I cannot be bothered ATM) and then did single tests on all of them and then used the highest one to compare them.

And as you can see all 4 match up.

Here is the closest server they say are close to me due to geolocation LOL:
[Middlesbrough: Single Download Result]
https://www.speedtest.net/result/7899506475

[Middlesbrough: Multi Download Result]
https://www.speedtest.net/result/7899502657

As you see in the above single download result its very low, I am guessing that routing to that server has issues, where as with the multi downloads results are a lot better but still 2 thirds my actual speeds, so something might be wrong with their servers or due to where its 250 miles away, maybe its under load.

[Leeds: Single Download Result]
https://www.speedtest.net/result/7899511117

[Leeds: Multi Download Result]
https://www.speedtest.net/result/7899503884

The results from the Leeds Servers are a lot better and close to my actual speed considering they are about 200 to 210 miles from me.

So like I said you need to pick the one that gives you the best single test result and then use them for that test.

OK, I'll bite. Are you on an old Community Fibre product as I thought connections were symmetrical?

EDIT: D'oh! Just noticed Community Fibre is the test server and not your connection blush

LOL, nope, my connection was part of the original 66% commercial rollout back in 2011 (just BT forgot to turn it on LOL)
Was originally on Zen with ADSL2+, then brother took Zen when he moved out so we moved over to BT and been with BT since, kept pestering BT about FTTP and have had FTTP for the last 26 to 28 months (i.e. just over 2 years now).

I just choose a server that gives me the fastest speed, so I do a few tests.

I normally choose Structured Communications which use to give me the best result, Community Fibre Limited also gave me a very good result and a few others.

It's just that Structured Communications are having issues with my connection at the moment especially on the single download tests, whereas Community Fibre Limited shows my full speed on the single download test.

IMHO the best Ookla Speedtest server for best (consistent) results is Vodafone London. You can choose a favourite server which Speedtest.net automatically defaults to smile

Yeah they are ok, I think Community Fibre Limited Servers are closer to me, due to I get lower ping / latency and slightly faster speeds, but I will see over the next week or so.

Yeah I was aware of being able to choose what default server, but I like to alternate servers due to the default one might be under load.

they took their sweet time. Hopefully the speedtest-cli script gets updated for it.

Also tbb wasnt the only player, dslreports is a nice speedtest you can choose single threaded, you can also choose 32 threaded so you emulate steam which is good for testing QoS.
