FTTP first 30 days issues

[link to this post]

Trying to findout what are common issues that effect FTTP connection within the first 30 days service activation. As these would be it's very nature more likely be an installation issue.
What are the faults?
Who is more likley effected with these type of issues Incumbent or the Altnets?
Is more likey to happen when done by Infrastructure preferable installer or some other third party installer?
How common is it for a customer to have expectation which was not promised?

Well personally no issues (Openreach, connected in 2019). Anecdotally from this hallowed forum, any initial connection issues fall into one of these buckets, not really in any order, prevalence is hard to gauge as there’s really no good stats :

1. Physical connectivity issues (poor splicing, issues upstream especially if the PON is relatively new - with no or few customers). Splicing issues appear more prevalent with AltNets rather than Openreach or CityFibre but I’ve no real stats to back that up.

2. Incorrect GPON bandwidth profile configuration. Occasional. Not that prevalent.

3. Issues with CPE - incorrectly configured, faulty.

4. Account issues; including bandwidth/profile limits from previous FTTC connections being applied to FTTP service at the ISP end (BRAS) . Obviously only applies where same ISP was supplying products. Login issues with PPPoE credentials or for CF/some AltNets correct VLAN ID

5. User issues; including poor home network setup or issues with own devices limiting throughput/performance due to configuration, AV software, or age or combination of these factors.

From experience:

No issue with te atual connection, link and service.

However, billing needs to be carefully checked - I stayed with same ISP but endeded an FTTC contract early. SHould have been no early termination charges, but I was hit with them (resolved).

The BT Business Hub2 has/had a bug. on a 300/50 service, downstream was fine, upstream limited to 30-35Mbps. Tried alternate device and 50 achieved - so service fine, device, buggy.

Painful. TTB kept repeatedly trying to bill me for “paper billing” despite never issuing any paper 🤣. This went on for several months. Each month I’d call and complain and they’d issue a credit note on the next invoice. Eventually they got it sorted but it was an avoidable and unnecessary waste of everyone’s time had it been sorted first time.

I have frequently seen issues with regrades with the same ISP but not renewals.

Did see a problem with a Plusnet ADSL to FTTC transfer and in the end the new FTTC was charged at less that the alreasdy ridiculously cheap ADSL! One happy pensioner.

Oddly my Openreach fibre worked fine for 6 weeks then just stopped working - turned out the inside out fibre was faulty - working one day then no light the next.

I can only guess at a manufacturing fault as there was no physical damage that we could see.

Impossible to spot really (unless its obvious the fibre has a macro bend or has been obviously abused)

The only way to check is with an OTDR test and that sort of testing only partly happens during commissioning of the PON, and not for each user connection. Thankfully these sorts of faults are reasonably few and far between.

Had OpenReach FTTP for about 18 months and not had any issues with it. My brother had OpenReach FTTP for probably 3 years without any problems (unfortunately has moved to somewhere that only has FTTC now).
