What's this?

My mum is moving to a new flat. She currently has a careline plug-in base unit.

Could someone please identify the these units, and whether the base unit is compatible.

It will depend on the Careline base - and the Local Authority or monitoring company.

Some Careline works on IP, some do not, some LAs have the appropriate interfaces for IP others do no ...

You will need to ask the LA what their system will do, will it need an upgrade or will it not work.

The White box is an ONT Openreach Optical Network Terminator (ONT). This means that your mum's new flat has FTTP (Fibre to the Premises).

These light indicate power connector, bit like how your router light up or blink. Not all ONTs have battery backup with their unit. These are to ensure in the event of a power failure that your connection doesn't go down. If it says charging, it is most likely charging the backup battery. If it doesn't light up then most likely it isn't charging it or the battery isn't present.

The next photo is the fibre optic external enclosure where the fibre cables enter into your property. And the ports above it are your TV/Radio aerial system, but that doesn't have anything to do with Openreach.

It will continue to work as long as you subscribe to an ISP plan that includes a voice service.

According to that link and the three shown: The Essential requires a phone line but the Essential+ and Complete do not - which one does she have?

From talking to a service supplier recently who used teh same hardware as the Essential, they were not sure if it woudl work though a DV adapter or not.

That will be taking the voice service from the ONT (Fibre Voice Access) and connecting it to any phone sockets around the flat. FVA is no longer available but that socket could be used to connect to a router to provide voice service to devices that need to plug in at another location.

The Openreach box with no lights is an internal CSP - I've the same.

I can confirm that the Tunstall VI unit (the one shown on the Essential plan) will work over VoIP. My father in law uses the same one and it is plugged into the phone port on his router. When I asked the council who provide his if it would work, they couldn't give me an answer, they just wanted him to pay extra to go on the mobile data version. But it definitely does.
