New Speed not reached

[link to this post]

Hi

I have just gone to BT/EE with a 150 connection, previously it was about 80.

When I run a speed test from my iphone i get the 150mbs

but when i try from my pc i only get 80/90?

I thought maybe an older network card to i bought a new wireless dongle - but still only 80/90.

What else should I be looking for on my PC? (apart from a new one!)

thanks
ian

Try with a cable first as there are too many factors with wifi to factor in.

OPNSense on Topton N100 - SWISH Fibre 900
NextDNS (subscription) - Unifi for Wifi
My Broadband Ping

I am already hard-wired into the router. but maybe the cable is too old. I'll replace it and see.

thanks for your reply, much appreciated.

What physical speed is your PC connected at when you connect using a cable?

so, just been testing it and the cable is an old 100mb cable. So I have ordered a new 1gb one.

This should take me a step forward at least, though it doesnt explain why the wifi on my phone works at 150mb but on my pc only 80mb.

but i am happy to be moving forwards!

Thanks for your reply.

Maybe the new dongle is only connecting to the slower 2.4Ghz band and your phone is connecting to the faster 5Ghz band. Irrespective, I would recommend using a good Cat 6 cable over Wifi every time.

Probably cheaper with a cat 5e cable.

Are you using a VPN, Antivirus software? Could be a huge number of issues.

yes indeed, that is almost always the best best. just the walls are so thick, so have had to order a major drill as well!
