VOIP

Had my first experience of VOIP today. Power cut so called 105 for Northern Powergrid and the call kept breaking up and lagging. Who said VOIP was better than old copper?

Been using VoiP for 10 years at work and it generally works fine - it gets bad when there is latency/lag in the line and then it does break up.

I get text messages about power cuts. Useful as my mobile phone is usually still working.

Northern powergrid call centre may have set their systems to low bitrate codecs and or put too many voips on too small a bandwidth quota..

Same, in my experience the first message is pretty soon after the outage, and updates follow on from that. I generally don't bother calling as a result.

Very unlikely you had your first experience of VoIP, the companies you call will have been using it for over a decade now, as have the networks moving those calls around.

If you have a specific issue with your VoIP service then put the details here and people can try and help.

Youngster ...

Worked with a very early VoIP system in about 1991/2 and started implementing on a couple of closed customer sites where it was all internal. But it worked.

Moved jobs and started to work with a few implementations from about 1994 where the big issue we had was satellite delay and lot of fine tuning and tweaking was done. The biggest bug bear throughout - codec match/mismatch.

Been in work a lot longer than that but prior to that we used PSTN PBXs.
