A quick query - One touch switching

[link to this post]

Our current setup is Zen FTTC and phone with BT. Recently a few FTTP altnets have become available. If I was to sign up with one of them without taking a phone service, would I be correct in thinking that the one touch switching service would automatically terminate our FTTC connection but BT telephone would continue unaffected?

In the process you need to match against a provider so if that is Zen I can't see how the phone service could move. I wouldn't bet my money on it and given POTS lines not being easy to get hold of I would check though.

Here's the official answer to your query:

https://totsco.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/One...

15.3 Customer wishes to switch broadband and retain voice
In this scenario, the customer wishes to switch broadband from Zen and retain the voice service with Post Office. Let’s assume
the customer is sensible and provides Zen as the current provider:
• The initial match request will request cessation of IAS and retention of NBICS.
• Zen will find their active broadband service, and generate a positive match response for the IAS.
• Zen will find that they do not have the underlying WLR service (on this customer’s account or any other customer) and
will return a warning against the NBICS that it must be with another RCP, but it can be retained.
• The SOR generated by Zen will authorise the switch of broadband service.
• The switching information sent by Zen to the customer will cover the proposed loss of broadband only, and should
inform the customer that WLR is not expected to be impacted.
No match request will be sent to Post Office, and their WLR service can continue unchanged.

Given that was written in 2023, and as we are now in the post-WLR stop sell world, I would NOT necessarily put money on this scenario now being totally correct / unchanged.

Hopefully the OP will make their own detailed investigations…

I don't think the process should have changed per se post WLR world. The problem is if things go wrong, they could end up going very wrong.
I would still flag this with the providers very very clearly including implicastions.

Theoretically the broadband just moves across to the new network, leaving the voice ‘untouched’ on the copper with BT. Theoretically.

Personally I’d get that number moved off the copper onto a VoIP provider to de-risk it from disappearing (and also save on line rental) and wouldn’t play around with this OTS in this scenario.

If the number is the thing you want to save sure, but it sounds like it might be the PSTN line itself smile

A question for the OP then as PSTN (as it stands) has only got a limited life time of another 18 months (if not before if the customer isn’t deemed vulnerable) before it’s withdrawn…what follows could well be another router etc just to host the voice line….
