Closing An ISP Account Down

[link to this post]

Had the ADSL 2 connection for about 20 years (years out of contract), never changed isp, never closed one down before, only opened my FTTP account with a separate isp.

Thinking about closing my ADSL 2 isp down, this has 'carrier pre-select on the line' for Phone calls over the BT copper pair.

So I do not loose our BT phone number we had for 42 years I have got to do things in the correct order I
would think.

I would think the phone number is kept by BT ??? I could then port it if I decide to.

Looks like there T&C say give 30 days notice, can not see anything about the phone.

Any advice please.

The best way of keeping the phone number you have had for 42 years is to start by porting that phone number to a VOIP provider. The ceasing of the ADSL is just a matter of course after the porting has been started.

My family did this last autumn, number was over 50 years old, and at th9e time was with Plusnet on a traditional copper voice + FTTC. They had new ISP installed without voice service, and ported phone number to A&A which cancelled Plusnet services.

All outgoing on mobile phones that have lots of inclusive minutes. All incoming via A&A for elderly friends who don't understand numbers not starting 01xxxx

I had phone+FTTC with Plusnet.

I installed a separate FTTP service. I then ported the copper phone number to a VOIP provider. Doing that automatically cancelled the copper phone line and the attached FTTC.

This is the correct order in which to do it, and will avoid you losing your cherished phone number.

DO NOT give any notice of your intention to cancel to your phone or ADSL providers. This is very important! They will receive the request directly from the VOIP provider.
