This thread has popped up at the right time. We currently have copper voice with BT and FTTP with Lightspeed. I was wondering if I'd be limited to getting VOIP from Lightspeed if I want to retain a landline or not.
Answer: no. Get your VOIP from any provider of your choice, and it works over-the-top of whatever Internet connection you have. In fact, it will work from any Internet connection in the world, which might be handy. (Use an app such as Acrobits on your mobile, as mentioned above).
Still haven't decided if we're going to keep a home phone at all yet though
If not sure, you can always migrate the number to VOIP (which will trigger a cease the copper line), and then decide to get rid of it after a year or whatever if you don't find you use it. You're looking at typically £10-£25 to port the number dependent on provider, plus VOIP hardware to plug existing phones or DECT base station into (unless you're only using an app), plus whatever the monthly rental is: with AAISP it's £1.56 per month, which is the cheapest monthly deal I know of, now that Sipgate Basic is no longer available.
