... not stuck with one company. Not true- the Mobi format is available from many sites, mostly free.
Amazon gives a list of most of them, including its own library of free books.
After Amazon's own, Project Gutenburg is probably the best one, imho.

You can also convert the format from and to the Mobi format using the free application "Calibre" available from:

Still controlled by amazon, i bet any book that is published using the Mobi format have to go through amazon first.
do Amazon do with their books what they are doing with their MP3 downloads now and keep them on their cloud because they think we are too thick to make a back up?

i bet any book that is published using the Mobi format have to go through amazon first. You lose! Those other sites have nothing to do with Amazon & MOBI is an eBook format developed by Mobipocket; .AZW is Amazon's format.
Yes, Amazon do auto store the books you buy from them, only, on their sites.

edit- it also makes it much easier to transfer your purchases to a new Kindle if the old one dies for any reason (or the owner simply updates to a newer one). A backup won't help in those circumstances as the files are registered to a specific machine.

i always make back ups, my books are stored on Sd card and my music is stored on 3 different devices.
TBH, i think Kobo does things the same way, in that you can download to another device, but I don't think they got a cloud like amazon do.

You are correct, I was just testing i clean forgot that AZW is amazons own format.
Still one big company that got too much control, can anyone else produce a e-book that will take AZW?
Yes, Amazon do auto store the books you buy from them, only, on their sites.
I will stick with the Kobo, just a shame the company was taken over by a Indian company, but i still think the Kobo is a better.

can anyone else produce a e-book that will take AZW? Yes, ManyBooks supply eBooks in AZW format while FeedBooks supply MOBI. I get most of my free eBooks from those.
