Desperate people

[link to this post]

I ordered a bunch of Crucial 4 TB M.2 SSD's from Amazon on Monday. The parcel arrived yesterday and I collected it from the local Amazon Locker on my way home.

Tonight I open the individual SSD boxes to reveal.....precisely nothing!

All the SSDs have been taken out of their packaging and the boxes carefully re-sealed. It was until I looked more closely that it's clear the seal on the 'other' edge of each little box has been broken.

So someone (presumably at the Amazon distribution centre or the product distributor) has helped themselves to almost a grands worth of SSDs. No doubt they'll be on eBay or Faceache Market any time now....

Amazon sending replacements out for tomorrow.

I'll keep schtum till the replacements arrive, suffice to say that Amazon didn't quibble, didn't ask for photos or further details other than what I typed in the little box online and explained over the phone.

Makes me wonder if it was all a little test 😂 Precisely of what I don't know!

You may have not been the first too complain about it, if its an inside job the replacements may be no better.

Remonds me of an order I placed for an underfloor heating controller.

It arrived, but the case was shrink wrapped! Videoed opening the wrap and case - empty! Control board missing.

Called the supplier who could not believe it - but believed me. Arranged for a new one to be shipped.

New one arrived in a large Jiffy-bag - but it felt light, so I videoed opening the Jiffy-bag, then shrink wrap, then the box - yes, empty.

They investigated and found 40 more on their shelf with no control board fitted!

Do you normally take videos when opening stuff you've ordered online or was there something about this particular thing that made you do it?

Theres a good chance that is the case. I don't want to jinx this situation any more than necessary through!

These units were pretty cheap/heavily discounted...so I started having suspicious thoughts; were they too good to be true and all that, but its Amazon UK and not some random dude off eBay...

A plastic box - 300x200x50 with the original makers shrink wrap and feeling light made me suspicious. Occasionally when receiving a high value item, or something that might be attractive to the light-fingered in the delivery chain, I will video it. It protects me and the sender.

Fair enough indeed.

The last time something like this happened to me, was about 2.5 years ago. I'd ordered a nice set of Apple AirPods Max (the over-ear variety) as a gift and also personalised with an engraving.

Anyhow after a long wait, two months later they finally arrived. They were delivered by a nice UPS delivery lady, but as soon as she handed it to me I could tell there was something totally wrong - there was almost no weight to the parcel!

I quickly opened it and sure enough - empty box inside the nondescript outer box. I ran down the street and chased her down. She grudgingly accepted it back after showed her. It was literally seconds after she'd stepped away back to the truck.

Apple however took a lot of convincing and it took around 3 weeks before they fully refunded me.

I've seen a fair number of reports like this in the last few months, usually (but not always) involving attractive or high value items.

But whether it's the usual degree of pilfering that any business is likely to encounter and the press taking the opportunity to indulge in a bit of Amazon-bashing, or signs of something more organised is something only Amazon know crazy

Been a few reports locally of the Herpes delivery driver taking their usual doorstep delivery photograph then when the delivery is refused / returned for some reason the delivery remaining flagged as delivered. Makes you wonder if the local driver is being a bit opportunistic in acquiring some freebies for themselves.

Certainly a possible reason... if the scale of items going missing is growing then hopefully Amazon are keeping an eye out for possible correlations (maybe using AI to do the grunt work for them wink).

Opted to go the refund route. The replacements weren’t going to be delivered until Sunday, which unfortunately doesn’t work out timing wise with holiday plans etc.

It’s a chunky loss for Amazon. No doubt they’ll be taking a closer look at what’s going on in the depot and/or checking their supplier.

I’m sure I’m not the only one that’s been done.

The videoing of the opening of packages was highlighted on Morning Live, a few months ago, as a good thing to do.

If this becomes a recurring problem, I may need to start doing that.

For now though Amazon have been very good about it; not asked for any photos, videos or other evidence and have agreed to refund me in full. That’s good customer service.

And today - expecting a delivery from Evri/Herpes and even now and 23:59 it is still "Out for delivery" Evri have failed to respond to question and te supplier informed of potential loss/misappropriation. I also have 3 cameras with a view of my path and front door, that auto alert me if a person is seen, so they cannot claim to have delivered or tried.

You do not happen have an address of Samename Close round the the corner from Samename Street are you? Seems some delivery drivers are easily confused by that sort of thing. And i.s your house number / name clearly visibile and readable from the road. Many aren't

Very frustrating. Especially so if you’ve been waiting for them, so they don’t just chuck it into next door neighbours bin….

No, it was still "out for delivery on Thursday" on Friday afternoon.

And Evri's response with 24 hours failed - as expected

I've brought vodka via Amazon, I've had at least 3 bottles go missing, one 50m away from my doorstep. I started to realise it is a problem at amazon, and the problem is that every amazon buyer has to foot the bill in higher costs.

That said with the current conditions i can understand why this is happening more and more. The videoing is a good idea and i might do that for high value items in the future (not vodka obs 😂)

Amazon seems to be getting worse. Ordered a replacement mouse, although I fixed the double click problem with current one with a can of air but that is another story. It was due today now tracking says tomorrow or next day. Details say stuck in transit.

I must say I’ve had no problems at all with Amazon. Most orders arrive within a couple of days with standard (almost always free) delivery. No complaints at all.

I would have said the same until today. I ordered a POE injector from them and all I received was the power lead and a plastic bag in the parcel, no POE injector. It was only about £18 or so. Now I have a 5 - 7 day wait to see it I'll get my money back, I'm returning the power lead so I have to wait and see.

I've had stuff that has broken after a short period of time but never anything that's not been delivered.
