DVD drive problem

[link to this post]

My PC has an internal LG DVD re-writer which is about two years old and over the last year or so i've noticed that it sometimes fails to even acknowledge that a DVD has been inserted. It won't make any noise, no lights will flash or anything. If I double click the DVD drive icon a message appears saying "Please insert a disc into drive E:". After an angry episode of ejecting and re-inserting the DVD numerous times it usually fires up and works as if there was nothing at all wrong with it.

It's currently playing up too. I watched a West Wing DVD and then put another one on, and at the moment it's refusing to do anything with it. Any idea what could be wrong with it?

Matt.

It may be dirt or something in the drive? You could try blowing it out with a can of compressed air spray ( or for about the same price get a new DVD drive.

If it was dirty wouldn't it at least try reading the disc? My stepbrother's PS2 had dirt in the drive and it made an awful noise. My DVD drive isn't making a sound.
