Odd USB issue

[link to this post]

The ongoing saga of the rapaired Evesham desktop.

Both the original and new mobos support 8 USB 2 ports, six at the rear, two on the front panel.

I used to get occasional error messages when plugging a Hi-speed USB device into one of the sockets, the one about plugging in a USB 1 device (from dim memory). It's happening again with the new mobo, except I don't get an error message, just lose my other USB devices. If I plug a full or low speed device in, the socket works fine, and the other socket of the front pair is also fine.

I'm assuming (since the socket/cable has not changed) that there's a fault in the wiring or the socket itself, but if anyone can advise, I'd be interested to learn whether this is a known issue and what can be done about it - if anything?

Thanks.

If it is just one of the front sockets then it is highly likely they have connected it to the motherboard incorrectly.

The connection to the header looks OK, as best I can tell - it's in the same relative adjacent position that takes two sockets to the rear (the remaining four are hard-wired on the bckplate).

Given it's had issues on two mobos, I was wondering whether something in the cable or socket itself (which I can't see the rear of) might be amiss. I suppose one way of checking would be to switch the header connection to the rear and see if to works OK there...

Have you checked within Device Manager to see if you have any problems with your USB Controller?

You might find This interesting to read, especially Point 9.

Device Manager is fine until I plug anything into the suspect port, then it shows an error on that device, but not the others, even though they have stopped working at that point.

I'll have a read, thanks for the link.

I'm inclined to agree with you. It would very much depend upon whether or not the front header socket which plugs into the mobo has the tenth socket blanked.
