Wireless adaptor thrashes hard drive??

[link to this post]

Hiya,

I'm using a Sitecom wireless PCMCIA card in my (admittedly quite old) IBM Thinkpad laptop (P3 / 256mb ram). It works fine, but all the time I'm connected, the hard drive is continually active - blinking and clicking like crazy!

CPU usage is around 3-8% and browsing works ok. If I connect at work with an ethernet cable, hard drive is quiet and normal...

And suggestions appreciated - poor little hard drive

Could be because you need more memory.

If you press Ctrl-Alt-Delete, click the Performance tab, and look at the Total Commit Charge and the Peak Commit Charge. If these are over 256Meg you will get some disk thrashing.

Set up task manager to and see what process is doing all the reads, (you will need to select the columns, as it doesnt show this by default) and try ending it or disabling at startup. You may have aditional software installed with the card which is unneccesary - windows can handle it fine. All you need is the card drivers.

I had a similar issue with intel wireless connection bloatware, sounded like someone flicking a pack of cards every 10 seconds really annoying.
