Help please - Motherboard problems

Hi all,

I have a MSI 7026 (see sig) motherboard and occasionally, it freezes on a cold reboot or a restart.
Can someone tell me, would this be caused by the battery on the motherboard running low, or would this be a PSU issue? I have noticed that the last few times it has happened, if I switch the PSU's switch off, then on, the machine boots normally.

Any help/advice gratefully accepted.

could be the cmos battery, for the couple of quid they cost, its worth changing to see

May be worth starting the system with the case off sometime and seeing if all the fans are starting, they can sometimes have an effect

One would hope that they always have an effect...

Most likely to be a PSU issue, often solved by:

Disconnect mains cable & USB peripherals, press & hold the power button on the front of the tower for 15sec then release, reconnect mains, power up. (ATX reset)

The majority of the time, this solves such issues.

CMOS battery running low would only cause the mobo to lose it's CMOS settings, which would report an error at POST.

I would also say its psu related.
Did you add any new drives or hardware?
also what is the psu rated for?
How far back is the unit to the wall?
is the computer still in warrenty?

I know its a load of questions but at least we can see whats happend then we can give a better answer.

Nope, no new hardware.

According to Evesham, when I asked about 6 months ago, it's 350W.

About 7" clearance from any wall.

Nope, as dictated by Sod's law, the warranty's run out.

I tried this about 5x but it didn't work. In the end, I switched the PSU off at the back and did the saturday shopping, then after about 1 1/2 hours, tried again and it booted first time.

I'll try to get to Maplins on Monday to replace the CMOS battery, but I think, as others have said in this thread, that the PSU is probably in need of replacement.

I had the case side off last night and all the fans were whirring away nicely.

I would try to get a 450watt + simply because i think your hitting the limits of your 350 watt psu. Is it warm or hot to touch... Just remember when u turn on any electrical device it will peak. and this with some some psu's causes problems for it.

Actually, I'm seriously considering the Hiper 580W modular PSU - Slight overkill perhaps, but at least I've got more 'reserve' juice, if need be.

WRT the temp of the PSU, I've just held my hand to the back of the case and it's not warm/hot at all.
