Sky+ and the HDD

[link to this post]

I was given a dead sky+ box from my mother..

I have been meaning to take the drive out and use it in my pc for backups.

I have been told that its not worth it, its a slow HDD its only 40gb blah blah blah but this sky box has 80gb stamped all over the box and a sticker on the actual sky box also has an 80GB sticker on the bottom.

But i took out the drive anyway and to my surprise its a Seagate 160GB IDE ATA100 drive!

In the PC it went and after a format its all working and it is a 160gb and its quite nippy with an avg read of 78mb/sec so im well pleased ^^

But why does the sky box say its an 80 when its really a 160?

Sky 'reserve' 80GB of the 160GB for their current and future use, only half the disc capacity is availble to the end user. In the Sky box (not +) there is a 80GB disc but only 40GB available.

An example of 'current' use by Sky is Anytime TV

You have never been inside a normal Sky box, it must have been a shop display item. tongue

You are quite correct, I was confusing boxes. blush blush blush

I have a Sky+ HD box and was thinking of the one I had before as having the smaller HDD (which it has)

But of course the one I had before was a Sky+ box blush NOT a Sky box; that was the one before the Sky+ box

I am afraid it is just another example of advancing years and incipient brain fade. crazy

However, the principle of Sky only allowing half the HDD capacity to be available for the end user is correct. grin
