Laptop New screen or component?

[link to this post]

I have a one pixel wide red line running top to bottom of my Toshiba LCD screen. If I flex the screen the line will disappear, but returns when I stop flexing. Will I need a new screen or a component?

Seems to be a fairly common complaint with Toshibas. Some people have reported that it can be fixed by giving the screen and/or surround a sharp tap where the line is occurring. Other than that, it's a new screen.

Or while a away a couple of hours in the shed making a pupose-built vice to fasten to the screen to hold it in the flexed position. laugh

That was OK for a couple of days, but I seem to have passed that fix now. Depending at what angle the screen is determines how many vertical lines are present, and also if the lines are red or yellow frown

Even if the laptop is a couple of years old you could use the provisions of the Sale of Goods Act to get it repaired as it is "not fit for purpose". Look at the ConsumerDirect website http://www.consumerdirect.gov.uk/ for more information.

I've had the facia off the screen, but couldn't see a ribbon cable. I wasn't really happy loosening the screen itself. There seemed to be a lot of wires running down both sides of the screen, perhaps to do with the built in web cam.

Is it a big job replacing the screen?

Well I found a video which shows how to replace the screen. I took mine apart, removed and replaced the ribbon cable a couple of times, but it hasn't helped.

If it gets any worse I'll replace it, it's not too bad at the moment.
