Which brand is on the roll at the momment?

Was going to go for a seagate for the first time in 10 or 15 years but they appear to be having a few problems with their drives becoming inaccessable at boot.... Any recs?

Last few drives I have bought were Samsung, I have no complaints with them.

I have a couple of Samsung F2 EcoGreen for backup/storage and a Samsung F3.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I've RMA'd 4 F1 Spinpoints in the last 6 months, all but the last one with the same problem and significant data loss. I am waitting to get this replacement drive to copy the data off another F1 so I can RMA that after precautionary testing showed errors on the drive which haven't yet manifested themselves in any serious way...

I've got an F3 Spinpoint which hasn't yet developed any problems but I'm beginning to see the wisdom in diversifying my portfolio a little.... Whilst I might consider an F2 or an F3 (and to some degree I'm limited by what microdirect supply, or getting in to an argument about refund vs credit note), I'm thinking introducing a different brand in to the system makes good sense.

All drives have their problems, Simple as that. What you need to consider when buying the latest 2TB drives is how you plan on backing up the important data you store on there.

I buy drives on the basis on their complexity to repair should I not back something up that I absolutely must have, and on this basis I would choose Seagate.

WD, samsung, fujitsu - parts availability, or compatibility between parts is the issue I have with them.

We don't see so many Hitachi's at the moment coming through the lab if that says anything about the drives?

I have two Western Digital WD RE3 type hard drives. They have a 5 year warranty; therefore a little more expensive.

They are designed for server use where reliability is a major factor; so I figure that a home computer should be well within their design spec. Having said that; anything can fail. frown

They are very quiet as well. smile

Thanks folks,

A 2TB WD drive is one of the finalists.

I have to admit that spare parts issues are beyond my level. I'm happy as long as they are compatable with sewing needle v.1.00 for pin replacement. Having said that prioir to the reign of cheap samsung 1TB drives Hitachi was my default position and I've yet to have one fail on me, although the decrease could equally be down to the fact that they dont seem to be as commonly stocked as they were before the IBM merger.

Backing up is also a bit of a moot point. Most of my storage is multimedia libraries in my PVR, and unfortunatly with over 3TB of storage I have to accept that most of it is going to have to be left unbacked up. Obviously any jewels are either held on 2 disks or backed to DVD.

All advice currently under consideration.... thanks again.
