The receiver sits on my desk about 3ft away from my mouse, where it has done for the last 4 years. It's only the last 2 - 3 weeks it has started playing up. I've done various diagnostics with Logitech (including testing with / without the software and in another PC). Logitech's response is that the unit is now "defect"

As I understand the cursor for you MX1000 has stopped responding to any mouse movements. It seems like the mouse loses connection to the Receiver. Unfortunately if you test it on another PC and it has the same symptoms then it a very clear sign that the product is defect.
PS. I'm very happy with my keyboard (MS Natural) and am only looking to replace the mouse.
