Ram question

I've ordered more ram to upgrade from 4gb to 8gb of memory but i have a small question about settings.

My current ram is 2x 2gb of Kingston hyperX 1333mhz with timings of 7-7-7-21 running at 1.7V
Problem is kingston seemed to no longer make that exact version of ram anymore so the closest i could get was.

Kingston hyperX 2x 2gb 1333mhz timings 7-7-7-21 @ 1.65v
So slightly lower voltage. I dont think my motherboard can change the voltage settings for individual sticks of ram so what settings should i use?

If on an intel Core i3/5/7 you should probably stick to 1.65v

My pc is AMD based Phenom 2

OK, not as critical as the Intel processors which can (theoretically) be damaged by RAM voltages above 1.65.

I'd go for 1.65 though in the first pace as it will run a (tiny) bit cooler

Isn't there the risk that if i set it to 1.65v that might not be a high enough voltage to run my old 1.7v ram stably at its rated settings?

Yes, there might but in practice it's not a huge voltage drop so chances are it will be OK. Just try the lower voltage first and then up it to 1.7 if there are any problems.

If you want to make sure everything is OK at the lower voltage get a copy of memtest86 and give it a good run (I tend to leave it at least overnight but longer is better if you have the time)

Ok ill start it at 1.65 and test then up it if there are any issues. I dont have the ram yet it should arrive tomorrow.

Ok it seems i got a bigger problem than ram timings. I got the new ram and tried to install it and pc will not boot (not even get to bios) with it installed. things i've tried.

I've tried each stick of the new ram in both ram ports on there own to rule out a dodgy ram port or stick of ram. and i've reset the bios to default. Still nothing. So way i see it is.

Rather both new sticks of ram are faulty somehow. Or both my spare ram ports are faulty. Or there is something about this new ram that doesn't like my motherboard/setup.

Any thoughts anyone?

will your pc boot with 1 stick of your old ram in?

If so, try than stick in all the slots to make sure they work.

If it does, get 1 of the new sticks and try that.
