IT Hardware Longevity

My current flat panel monitor will be 10 years old in July, is this normal or exceptional?

I'm aware that people have had printers for many years, my previous one, an HP Laserjet 4L, lasted 12 years.

I'd be interested in other's experience of long lasting IT hardware.

Probably the oldest kit I have running is a Dell Dimension from about seven years ago which runs Windows 7 without too much of an issue. Also a MacBook Pro which is of about the same age.

Haven't had much success with printers - probably because they were inkjets rather than laser.

Epson inkjet printers used to "fail" because the waste ink pad was assumed to be full.
Google "epson ink pad full?" for a detailed account.
I'm not sure if they still do this but hundreds of otherwise good printers must have been dumped.

Had a Dell Dimension running Win98 and it went for 12 years - powered up for most of the time although it would go into sleep/hibernate when not required so did have a large number of on/off cycles. It just became too slow and changes meant I no longer needed it for hosting printers and ISDN fax.

LaserJet5P from '95 which is still going strong ...

An 8 year old Dell Latitude laptop that is used occasionally and a Toshiba Laptop coming up 10 years ...

My HP OfficeJet 725 is still going strong. I can't remember when I bought it but I was using Win95 at the time.

My HP 710c still going strong originally bought for use with Win98, so what 12 years?

A little bit of TLC and they'll keep going for ages. The waste ink "tank" isn't full yet (touch wood.) One advantage of HP's integrated print heads - you don't waste half your ink cleaning the heads.

My Amstrad PCW 8512 is up in the loft. No reason to believe it wouldn't work if I plugged it in.

My Toshiba Satellite 210 CS laptop (circa 1999) still works. Use it to program urc remote controllers when I get a new device.

My BBC Micro is in the loft. I'd use it but it takes up too much desk space. It's a damn sight faster than Windows.

Thinks... Built-in SSD and Raspberry Pi co-processor... Hmm...
