New laptop screen

I got a new screen for my laptop to replace the damaged one. When I turn the laptop on all I get is a blank lit screen. I have connected the laptop to an external monitor and that works fine.

Initially thought there was new screen was faulty but have tried it on a different laptop and it works fine so not the new screen. What can the problem be?

Are you sure the new screen is the right one for your laptop? I had a similar issue and had to send mine back as the company had sent out the wrong screen initially

What was the reason for replacing the screen in the first place? Only reason I ask is that are you sure it isn't the graphics card that has failed rather than the screen? It is possible for an external monitor to work and an internal display to fail and it still be the fault of the graphics card (I remember this from my old Dell laptop that had exactly that issue and ended up needing a new motherboard).

And why did it need a new screen in the first place?

Cable between the motherboard and screen or connector to screen faulty?

Ink leaked (or what appears to be ink) when the laptop was accidentally dropped.

OK, so you said you have tried the screen on another laptop and it worked? Have you tried the other laptops screen on this one? It could be that more than just the screen has been damaged.

Yes tried the new screen on a different laptop and it worked fine. Tried the other laptops screen on the one with the damaged screen but no joy with that either.

So, you definitely have a fault within the main body of the laptop. And that is where it becomes difficult to say anything here.

Only way to track it would probably be to substitute the components one by one until you find what is failing.

It's not uncommon for the VGA lead to fail where it runs through the hinge cover. However, if it's been dropped, that opens a whole raft of possible faults. If it fires up an external monitor, check the VGA leads and inverter.
