Display dim after Standby

My wife's HP Envy (Win7) goes to sleep very quickly when required but unfortunately on awakening the display is so dim that it's virtually useless. I suspect power settings on the graphics card but can't actually find how to change these. Or could it be something else? Strangely enough, it's one of the only laptops we've ever had in the house that connects with no trouble to our wireless network on wakeup. S**s Law, I suppose.

What's the status of the Ambient Light Sensor?

What's that?

It's the sensor that monitors ambient light levels and dims the display accordingly. If you disable it, it won't dim the display.

How is sleep mode enabled.

I usually press the power button and that puts it to sleep. My wife usually closes the lid as she likes things tidy! Where are the settings for the ambient light sensor - can I disable it?

just that there has been reports of other envy users having similar problems. Suggestions were disable sleep from lid closure and leave at no action.


Control Panel -> Hardware and Sound -> Power Options -> Edit Plan Settings -> Change Advanced Power Settings -> Display -> Enable Adaptive Brightness.

On my HP it's Fn and F11.

Really helpful advice - many thanks to all who've replied. Now can we move on to the Envy touchpad which freezes every few hours and can only be cured by a re-boot? I know about the top left hand corner to enable/disable but it's not that; I suspect another hardware glitch. What do people do who don't have these forums, I wonder!
