I very much doubt that. Are you sure that prior to last time he actually rebooted the machine? Could he have simply hibernated previously?

No, he doesn't know about hibernation and, as I built his PC, I know I disabled hibernation as I knew it would confuse him.

To the best of my knowledge, it's the same as mine - "Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller". As I said in the OP the controller is on the mother board.
