The router is a Netgear DGN1000, possibly 6 or so years old - not sure of its age.
As I was in the area this afternoon I called in. The power cycling hadn't apparently resolved the problem.
Turned the printer on and the WiFi light came on - though that doesn't mean it's actually talking to the wireless network. Logged in to the router and checked Attached Devices, no sign of the printer. So I rebooted the router.
Checked Attached Devices and the printer was now in the list, tried a test print, all OK.
So clearly the printer and/or the router are reluctant to talk via wireless. His wife's laptop connects via wireless (albeit not used that often) with no known problem.
The router is left on 24/7.
So why does the router seem to fail to 'see' the printer? Power cycling the printer never gets the router to see it, re-booting the router does seem to - more often than not - fix the problem, until the next time.
Could the router wireless capability be in some way dying?
The cabling is a complete mess, with the router sitting on a bunch of cable and power bricks with the aerial leaning drunkenly to one side. I have temporarily moved the router a couple of foot away onto a small shelf, I need a couple of slightly longer cables which I'll take over on Friday to do the job more tidily.
Any thoughts on what the problem may be?
Tony
