Been using a 64GB KingSpec ssd on my wife's old dell laptop without any issues over the last year.

Well I got a Hitachi 20gb travelstar today and imaged the old laptop OS as planned but it wouldnt boot. I used the restore option but had to use a program on floppy called Bootit NG to rewrite the MBR with a standard MBR which Reflect mustnt do, anyway all running now and the Hitachi is faster and bigger, just waiting for the SSD now.

I need to keep off ebay, I just bought a 64gb SSD for 12 quid, on closer inspection it is an SD IDE adaptor with a micro SD card and adapter. Seller claims 40mb/s speed.

Complain. Get a refund and buy some decent kit, especially if you need reliability. I'm not too worried about my MP3 player since everything's backed up on my PC. I can always buy another memory card.

Well I got my 128mb EDO 144pin SODIMM today and XP is running on the princely sum of 160mb RAM. Bit of a fiddle to fit as I had to remove the processor heatsink first but its in.

... and the 'SSD'?

The SD adapter works on my desktop but it benchmarks slower than the spinny Hitachi Travelstar. It reads about 20 mb/s wherea the hitachi reads at about 28 mb/s and write speed is pretty slow at around 10 mb/s, hitachi again is faster especially at 4k read/write speeds, so held off putting it in the laptop.

Currently bidding on a kingspec ssd (IDE) and according to the specs that should be faster but if I get it we will see.

Trouble with the Hitachi it has 8 reallocated blocks which is not a good sign, but it was only 3 quid. I havent looked if the SD adapter has SMART.

Edit: The SD adapter has some smart data including wearable data reading and reallocated sectors so must reserve some of the SD card for bad blocks and nice flashy red led for power and green for drive activity.

Well the Kingspec SSD arrived today and none of my machines can see it. The desktop adaptore ignores it when booting and the laptop sees it as two drives. Tried cable select on the drive but still dead, I wonder if 32gb is too big for the laptop but anyway my desktop sees all my other IDE drives through the apdator so I'm assuiming it is DOA and to be returned!

Success, well sort of. I have had windows XP running on an SD card adapter for most of the day but after a reboot during boot I get unmountable volume blue screen and I am not sure how to fix it. I wonder if its because I extended the primary partition from 8gb to 30gb using Aomei partician assistant and now the volume is too big to mount. Further investigation is needed.
