Ryzen 5

So a new cheaper Ryzen is coming out in April, called the Ryzen 5, looks interesting, but now got me thinking of either going for the more expensive 7, or go for the cheaper 5, what ever I get it will certainly be better than what I have got.

Microsoft is blocking updates for windows 7 and 8 on the newer processors, which is to be honest out of order, if people ant to run 7 or 8 on these CPU's then they should be allowed to. i can understand Ms not supporting them, but to block the updates, that is just typ;icle of Ms throwing their toys out of the pram if they can not get their way.

I've got a Ryzen 5 1600 and i am really, really impressed, it goes like the clappers.

I have heard good things about it, what memory are you using?

i must admit I am still thinking of going for the R7 1700x,

I was nervous about it not booting so i played it safe and went for a single 8GB stick of Crucial DDR 4 2400. I figured it was going to feel a millions time faster than what i had so better safe than sorry, i didnt even go for single rank or a kit to run in dual channel mode lol

I can be a bit more adventuous when the BIOS updates have slowed down and things settle.

I was going to ask about stability, but now I don't think I need to. I haven't had to do a BIOS update since I moved from AMD to Intel. Before that, I was doing them all the time, and not because it was a hobby. Some things never change, apparently.

i am looking at getting a couple of Corsair Vengeance LPX of 8GB each at 3200Mhz, I have no idea if they are single rank or not, how do you tell if it is not in the specs?

Getting a couple of sticks instead of populating all four, means I can stick more in at some other point, not that I seem myself doing that.

To be honest with you with just a single stick of PC2400 the cinebench scores on the 1600 are identical to the cinebench scores on the 1600x with presumably better RAM, the test i have seen they got 1136 and mine got 1129

I also moved from AMD to Intel and after 8 years i'm back with AMD.

When i set up my Intel stuff i remember having to do a couple of BIOS updates but after moving from Windows XP to Windows 7 i never had to do anything else the BIOS releases had stopped and as i went through subsequent versions of Windows i never had to do clean installs or owt so having to start again was a bit of a shock.

When i set this up i had the BIOS ready, i thought if that goes belly up i can do it before i have finished not afterwards. Anyway everything is installed and its fine, it is no less stable than my Intel parts were, the only thing i have done is set the fan profiles myself because the front case fan was running too loud.

I have had it running at 3.8Ghz with the stock cooler and default voltages, using the CPU-z stress test it just sat at 57c for an hour with the fans not that loud at all.

Well I have decided to go with the R7, i think it will be the 1700, but I did think about the 1700X, but not sure if the extra cost is worth it.
I will have to have a look and see if I can find any benchtests for all the processors.

the 1700 comes with a cooler, the 1700x don't, the problem is getting coolers for AM4 at the moment, sure you can get free brackets, but companies like Cryorig want proof of purchase for the cooler and the main board and it may takes for them to send the bracket


How noisy is the stock cooler? My FX 8350 have the stock cooler on and is pretty quiet, it is the video card fans that get noisy here.
