Power supply or something else?

Had my PC for a fair number of years but still does the job. Today it randomly turned off without warning. I thought it was a powercut but wasnt.

Anyway it turned back on ok but did it again 15 mins later. I looked in Event Viewer and no errors there. Scanned the HDD no errors and temps all look normal. So my guess is power supply. Anyway to know for certain without replacing it? Dont want to pay to replace it only to find its something else

Seems odd that it works for abit before turning off. If it was power supply i would have thought it would refuse to turn back on?

Have you checked all other components to see if they look damaged/worn or maybe overheating? Are all fans spinning properly?

Yea all fans appear fine, i have HWMonitor and checked with BIOS and temps are normal

Interestingly i scheduled chkdsk to run after a reboot and the PC didnt power down at all even though it took a fairly long time.

If it was power supply or overheating you would think it would turn off during chkdsk but it didnt. Which would perhaps suggest its not a PSU issue?

Yes, I would agree that a PSU fault would mean that the PC wouldn't turn on again. The slow shut down could be related to a HDD issue. Does a BSOD (Blue Screen Of Death) appear before the PC shuts down, or does it just shut down instantly?

Shuts off instantly as if there was a powercut.

Unless the power supply isnt supplying enough power to run windows correctly, but is still supplying enough to run chkdsk? I dunno

Possibly. Are you running chkdsk in Windows? I would check components inside the case to see if they've become slightly unseated.

I tried to run in Windows but it said it cant while the system is in use, so it scheduled it for after the next reboot. I rebooted and before Windows booted up it ran the check

I have a local PC repair shop. I assume they will have stuff to test the PSU so will drop it in their on Monday

I'd guess the dpu is overheating. Have you tried monitoring the temperatures?
