8 meg line slower than 2

[link to this post]

Since doing a sideways move from the 2 meg service with Idnet to the 8 meg service I have had terrible speed issues it is rarely over 1300k mainly below and the maximum I have ever seen it is 3000k once.
I can see the phone exchange from my window and the router reports only 1000 feet of cable so I should have a good service.
Idnet have told me that bt consider anything above 400k to be normal service and will not investigate further. The day they did something was when the speed worked up to 3000k a couple of days later but it soon deteriorated again.
My router is a d link 604+ and seems to work fine.

Any suggestions?

Yes - suggest you go back to the fixed 2 meg service !
Max seems to cause so many problems, I wouldn't consider using it myself.

You should test at BT socket. If that is still the line speed then you would be better off Max. If you get good speed then your internal wiring and settings need checked. Also check contention at the local exchange. Always a good place to start is to turn the router off for 20 minutes.

Believe it or not I have two connections, one a Max connection on what used to be the line for my BT Internet connection on dial-up, back in the mists of relative antiquity & is now my MaxDSl line, which is quite subject to variations in speed at peak periods.
My original line was enabled as a 2Mb line a couple of months ago & I have been doing some research on line speeds at different times of day, with interesting results.
I would endorse most of the advice given by the previous two posters. Please keep us posted of your experiences, being as you are located so close to the exchange.

Yup. Go back to the fixed speed 2meg.

Max never worked for me either and BT were no help at all. Fortunatly Idnet were (are) somewhat more accommodating than my previous isp

Yes, the advice given by Idnet was that it was not meeting expectations, given the fact I am so close to the exchange this would seem to confirm this.
Have tested again this morning at 2289k on btspeedtester and 2146k with a 371k upload on adslguide speedtester.

So a bit faster today was only 700k the other morning and have recorded speeds half that or less before at times.

Will sit tight unless it seriously deteriorates and if so i will change back. Perhaps I could try resting the router for a while but somehow I do not believe this will help in the long run.

If it goes below 400Kbps, BT will have to do something then, unless & a big unless, it is your own internal wiring.

I guess that as it was fairly stable on the 2 meg line and that now it has swung from 3300k at its very best once only to less than 100k at its very worst once. I seems likely its the unstability of the service.
I hope its not my wiring how does one check it? The router is wireless.

How long are you connected to Max as there is a training period? Also borrow a router and try that instead of your own.

Almost 2 months now, I believe the training period does not exceed 2 weeks.
