Engineer turned up soon after 9am and was gone by 10:10, once I connected with my Buffalo cheapo router, £23.56 inc delivery.
Everything looks fine so far wired, not got my wireless properly sorted yet. May be a router firmware update needed as I'm showing as Max 54(N) on InSSIDer and speed tests reflect that. I know the laptop connected at 130kbps to my Netgear 834N before I bricked it.
Engineer JDSU said 0.6km from cabinet, sync 39992kbps. Wired BT tests 36-38Mbps on 38717 profile.
The BBC Home page loads noticeably faster.

What happened to the PN router?
What are the advantages of the Buffalo router, is it to do with your new high speed connection or is it a chipset thing?

834PN is an ADSL2+ modem/router.
I'm on FTTC - needs a cable router .
It's a pretty good piece of kit by the look of it, costing peanuts. Once I fine out whY I'm not getting a true "N" connection to it.
Updated the firmware, hasn't helped.

Got the wireless sorted, now getting 65-130Mbps depending on conditions and full download speeds - 35Mbps+. 8 Mbps up.

Don't you just find these people irritating? What's wrong with a 3mb connection anyway? Yah Yah Yah

It depends what you do with it, Alf. I'm seriously thinking that, for me, fibre would be a waste of money.

I'm seriously thinking that, for me, fibre would be a waste of money. It's lovely and quick though
But seriously, even if you don't need the speed, being able to dispense with that long length of copper (or aluminium) from the exchange to your cabinet can make quite a difference to the reliability of the connection.

Reliability was another consideration with me Bill, though less important on LLU than on BTW. I would get periods of several hours with 20-second re-syncs, until stopping them with a Quiet Line Test.
That would have been a disaster with BT DLM, but I am assured by the engineers on these forums that unless it is cab >> house then that will be fixed now. PSTN cab >> exchange, which is almost certainly where the problem was, is now isolated.
As I said in an O2 thread, I don't need the speed, but nice to have. Not seen any profile changes yet, but got to watch the speed test frequency while I adjust to not being unlimited.

My line has always been reasonably reliable, it was mainly speed and "new toy syndrome" that made me switch.
It's impossible for me to be 100% sure, not being able to get line stats, but the fibre "feels" more stable than the copper... the line from the exchange to the cabinet ran through (or near) a small industrial estate so losing that can't have done any harm!

I agree, Bill, but in practice my connection is pretty reliable. I'll probably end up going to fibre, but it will be a want rather than a need.

To be honest I think Fibre should be rolled out to all households within the next 2years so that everyone has similar access for similar prices. At the moment many people get a slow connection compaered to others yet still pay the same price for a similar service. This is definately not right. If I had a telephone account of a set amount and had to pay for all my calls and someone else had the same telephoneaccount yet paid nothing for calls I think that would be unfair yet that is what is happening because of BT not rolling out a modern cennection for all.

Openreach appear to think that only BT Retail ,Zen and Eclipse are FTTC customers. With TALKTALK trailing.
Would it be possible for IDNET to make clear their involvement? as not being listed as providers on the Openreach list could be mistaken as IDNET purely being resellers of other providers.

You have to remember they were able to completely delete IDNet last year, Bill, this might explain why.

this might explain why. Maybe, but I doubt if there's a direct connection.
More likely to be just general incompetence, like the dates they keep giving, and changing, for the FTTC roll-out.

That was pretty incompetent too, Bill. I agree, though, it's probably unrelated and just reflects a degree of indifference across the entire workforce.

But what do you expect from BT? I'd expect them to check anything new they proposed to put up on the 'net against recognised standards and then with all the browsers they could lay their hands on... but after the debacle of their recent speedtest update I should have learned better

It doesn't look like it is a bona-fide BT site:
http://webwhois.nic.uk/cgi-bin/whois.cgi?query=openr... It probably is, sort of, but it looks like BT don't keep their sub-contractors up to date:
Westhill Communications, clients:

BT Expedite (who? ) and OpenReach are in there. Mind you, so is RBS which gives one cause for pause

Impressive. Now I only wish BT would also fix the poor internet connections in our town...

Now I only wish BT would also fix the poor internet connections in our town... But, but, I thought you were going to TT. Could it be you've concluded that since they use the same local loop, they aren't likely to provide a much faster or more reliable service.....
The local loop is fine, line is at the full 8128kbps synchronized speed of its so-called MaxPremium product (20CN, yes still widely employed by BT!) , at the 7.15mbps profile. The bottleneck is BT's local or regional exchange, speeds are so slow in the evenings that the internet at times becomes unusable, and IDNet has not been able to resolve this issue with BT.
So I signed up with Xilo's CPW LLU which doesn't use BT beyond the local loop, and which will take over the line next month.
So I signed up with Xilo's CPW LLU which doesn't use BT beyond the local loop, and which will take over the line next month. Be interesting to see how you get on....
Just curious - which package did you sign up for? Like you I'm on vanilla 20CN but assumed I could get just broadband via Xilo and CPW wholesale. However, I would have to go for one of the Xilo phone/BB packages which I assume are fully unbundled on a 12/18 month contract.
Given my problems are due to a poor quality local loop, I doubt I would see sufficient gain to make a move worthwhile, particularly given the potential downside of a fully unbundled service.

I signed up for the Talk Pro 50 package. It is a monthly contract and is full LLU. However, I believe Xilo will soon offer a similar package for CPW LLU broadband only, leaving the phone service on the BT based infrastructure.
My current package with IDNet hasn't been reliable enough for the past few months so I hope the switchover to a different non-BT backbone will solve the issues.
You are very much correct
Matt
As I've said my problem is with the local loop and I've found iDNet's service to be good so I'm not thinking of moving. However, I've tried the Xilo checker and it tells me I can't have the pro packages, which suggests that even though an exchange is TT enabled, they won't necessarily supply via their wholesale arm.
Pro won't show the TTB wholesale services. Try under the Phone+BB tab.
However, that'll change in a week or so when the SMPF TTB service will appear under Pro too.

Pro won't show the TTB wholesale services. Try under the Phone+BB tab.
However, that'll change in a week or so when the SMPF TTB service will appear under Pro too. Yup it does show up under the phone/BB tab but that would be fully unbundled which wouldn't be what I wanted. I'd be happy to leave the phone and line with BT (wholesale or otherwise) and just have LLU broadband, mainly to eliminate BTs DLM.
What's the advantage of leaving the phone part on the BT network?
What's the advantage of leaving the phone part on the BT network? BT phone service has never been a problem so I see no need to change, other than via BT wholesale. If I go fully unbundled and it turns out to be a bad move, I then have the problems of getting back a BT line back and so on. There's only TT and Orange LLU on the exchange.
OK the line is not very good for broadband, but I doubt whether moving to a new line would be any better since none of my neighbours are getting near the speeds I get; in fact some are getting little more than dial up. The only *possible* advantage in a BB move might be the different DLM.
Things are not yet quite bad enough to move, although that could change if the line deteriorates further. BT have said recently that the area will get FTTC "eventually".
What's the advantage of leaving the phone part on the BT network?
Not having to suffer through a Return To Donor (RTD) if you wish to migrate somewhere else - with the risk of losing your phone number as happened to at least one ex-Bulldog customer.
James - be* pro - on THFB - sync about 17.2mbps - BQM
