Speedtest versus router stats

[link to this post]

I just did a speedtest using the tool on this site after I noticed a dip in performance. What I found surprised me a little. I expected a discrepency between the router and the speedtest, but not quite such a big one. The speedtest gave me a download result of 1407kbps but the router gives a speed of 2176kbps. (full stats can be seen here: http://www.whollytrinity.co.uk/images/screenshot.jpg)

I had major issues back in April and June with my previous ISP and BT so I don't expect a superfast connection but this difference leaves me puzzled.

Any ideas anyone?

Thanks

Contention on the BT network ?

My router shows 8128 kbps downstream, but the actual speed can vary wildly from about 2000 kbps up to about 7000 kbps using ADSL Max.

I don't think that you have anything to worry about.

My speedtests are usually about half what the router gives. Tonight router says 3776 Kbps and Namesco speedtest 2848 Kbps, Dan Elswell's Broadband Speedtest says 2789 Kbps. As Steve says, it could be contention.
