IMAP

I'll probably be taking out an IDNet email account before long (one of the pay-for-it ones) and was thinking about setting it up to use IMAP instead of POP3 which I've always used before.

Questions:

• What advantages am I likely to find?
• Ditto snags
• If I decide I don't like it, can I revert to POP3 without losing anything?

Client is Outlook (not Express).

Advantages- if you delete a message it's completely deleted off the server- useful if you use more than one computer for access.

Disadvantages- you must be connected to read messages. I have my account set up for both IMAP and pop3- I use pop3 to download messages before I take my lappy out, where there is no guarantee I can connect.

You should be able to revert to pop3 fine. Like I said, I use both.

So is the POP3 account set to leave messages on the server rather than deleting them?

If so, how often (if ever) do you delete messages from the server?

Yup, the POP3 is set to leave them on the server.

I delete the mail on there while using IMAP- I have a folder on there called stuff to keep, so I know where the important emails are. I go through them every week or so.
