Short lived speed explosion after maintenance!

[link to this post]

I've been with IDNet for a few moths now and have, like everyone else here, been very happy with them. However, the download speed has never been as high as I think it should be...

I live only a short distance from the exchange and my router maintains a solid connection at 8096Kbps. Despite this the throughput doesn't exceed 3.5meg, even in the small hours of the morning, usually hovering around 2.5meg. IDNet tech support have been very good and even managed to get BT to retrain the line but that made no difference.

I was extremly surprised to find that the download speed almost double to around 6.5Mbps when the outage on Wednesday evening came to an end. This is more like the sort of speed I would expect to get, based on the line stats and sync speed etc.

The download speed remained between 6 and 7meg until about 9pm last night when it started to drop again. I thought this may be due to contention and hoped it may recover a bit during the night, but it didn't and it's now back to the usual 2.5 - 3.5 meg.

None of the line stats have changed from what were reported before and during the speed increase and the router is still connected at 8096Kbps. Before I submit this to tech support, does anyone have any ideas as to why the download speed wants to sit around 3meg when the last couple of days have shown that faster speeds are possible??

Cheers!

Have you checked your speed using the BT speedtester? (here)

When it works (the small hours of early morning seem to give you the best chance) it will give you your IP Profile. That will give a clue as to what is happening, but it sounds a bit like your profile is lower than you expect it to be. Once you know the profile, we'll know whether you need to talk to Miriam to get your BRAS profile unstuck, or whether there is another issue.

Are you sure, btw, that you haven't had any re-synchs at lower speeds, which would force your profile down?

That would be a bug. (Sorry, I could not resist that one!)

Speedtester seems broke. Best way is check your router stats, note the sync speed and call cs. They can see the profile from thier end.

It's down for 'essential maintenance' at the moment. Perhaps they're going to make it work???
