Curiousity

[link to this post]

When with my old broadband provider whenever I had a router re-set my ip changed plus on occasions my downstream attentuation changed, 55db usually but occasionally 56db was reported,

I quickly learnt that my line was more stable on the 55db attenuation monitored on router stats lite, Since being on IDNet with a static ip my attenuation is always 56db, will it always remain at that figure or could it 'swing' back to 55db in the future ?

Oh and I am not very techy but try to understand and learn fast smile

OK, so I won't go into the "why's" tongue

Your attenuation depends mainly on two things- the length of your line (the longer the higher) and to a lesser extent your sync speed (the higher the higher).

It's also not a particularly accurate figure, so a variation of 1db is neither here nor there (it's about 25% in power terms, 12% in voltage).

And then there are rounding errors... 55.4db would be reported as 55db, 55.6db would be reported as 56db.

Believe me, it ain't worth worrying about smile

It's also nothing to do with IDNet, it's purely down to the physics of that copper wire between you and whatever piece of kit is on the other end!

And rainfall, and ground conditions... and the phase of the moon I sometimes think crazy

Thank you, <very big grin> sorry folks but I do like asking questions...

Rainfall always gives me a better synch on a router reboot must watch the moon-cycle now as well smile smile wink

Does that mean I will get further away from the exchange when it's hot? frown

effectively, yeah. But it shouldn't adversively affect speeds. Were talking 1db to 2db at most here.
